First…Happy Valentine’s Day to all my readers!!
In honor of the day of love, I wanted to share some news with you guys. :) As many of you know, I’ve been working on the next Draegan Lords book, Circle of Ariend, for, ahem, a while now. I’m back on a roll with it and it’s going well. Something I’ve considered on and off as I’ve written this series is doing a couple of side stories with some of the secondary characters in order to give them their own spotlight without taking too much attention off Gaige and Keiran in the main books. I’ve had many, many readers ask for more about Wen and Wesley (The young draegan in charge of the draeganjhere and the young man the draegans rescued from the settlement under attack in Lords of Kellesborne. Gaige comes across them kissing in Fires of Ballian, if you’ll recall.). So my plan was to try to include more of them and their budding relationship in Circle of Ariend.
However, it was difficult to write much detail about their story within the framework of the main books without it feeling like too much of a side trip (I know because I tried). Plus, trying to squeeze them in that way really felt like I was shortchanging Wen and Wesley because I couldn’t give as much of their backstory and how they got together in the first place as I wanted to. So I decided to give them their own story that takes place concurrently with the main story. That way they get their moment to shine and readers can get to know them better, but it all happens within the context of the main plot and, in fact, moves the series plot forward a bit without slowing the books that focus on Gaige and Keiran. If that makes sense. :)
It seemed kind of cheesy to call it Draegan Lords 3.5 or something. *g* So my publisher and I are tentatively calling this a “Draegan Lords Interlude.” Since it’s a story within the bigger story, we thought an “interlude” sounded about right. The majority of this story takes place during the time period that runs between the end of Fires of Ballian and the beginning of Circle of Ariend, but it also gives readers insight into how the two young men hooked up in the first place, and it will be in Wen and Wesley’s points of view. I’m calling this story An Unexpected Magick and the tentative release date for this is mid-late March. Remember, when I post a date like this it’s not written in stone so please don’t…um…stone me if it doesn’t happen exactly. :) But, still, I’m on a roll with this series again (which feels really good!) so the plan is to have this released in the early/mid-spring, as it’s kind of a precursor to the events in Circle of Ariend, and then have Circle of Ariend come out sometime in the late spring/early summer–perhaps May or June. I’ll have to keep you posted on the date for Circle as I draw closer to “the end” and see when my publisher can schedule it.
Also…related to this, we had originally planned to release Fires of Ballian and Circle of Ariend in paperback together, much the way we did with True of Heart and Lords of Kellesborne. That’s why there’s never been a paperback of Fires of Ballian to date. However, Circle of Ariend is growing into a fairly long novel and all things considered, we’ve decided that combining it with Fires of Ballian, at this point, will make the paperback too unwieldy. So instead, we’re going to release Fires of Ballian in paperback on its own, a month or so before Circle of Ariend comes out. And what we thought we’d do is include the Wen and Wesley “Interlude” story as a bonus at the end of Fires of Ballian.
Okay, that’s all I’ve got for the moment. I know readers have been waiting a loooong time for the next book in this series, and I promised to do a better job of keeping you in the loop, so hopefully this will answer some questions for you and give you an idea of where things stand as of right now. Stay tuned for more info!
